TV Ramblings - Meerkat Manor

Used to be that the summer was rerun time. I generally took advantage of this by watching shows I didn't have the time to watch during the regular season. Now with cable TV and hundreds of stations to chose from, it becomes even more difficult to watch all the shows that seem interesting. To make matters worse, the stations have all made summer a new season by introducing even more shows.

Right now I'm watching Meerkat Manor on Animal Planet. I've always had a soft spot for these cute little mongoose cousins ever since I first saw one (on TV, of course, I've never been to the Kalahari desert where they live).

Cambridge University conducted a 10 year study of the "Whiskers" family of Meerkats and this is the basis for the show. It has all the drama and cliff-hangers of a soap opera.

I must say, I didn't know Meerkats were so vicious. There has been much in fighting and squabbling among the family members. Poor Tosca, daughter of leader Flower (females head up meerkat groups - smart little animals these meerkats!), has been ostracised for bearing a litter of pups. The lead female does not allow other females to mate so that her pups get the best care.

So far none have died except for one pup left behind when the family changed borrows - I wasn't happy about that. I hate it when animals die in animal stories. I also feel obliged to tell you that their diet (scorpions, centipedes, geckos and miscellaneous insects) is quite disgusting. I don't recommend eating while watching.

The show is on 8pm EDT on the Animal Planet channel (57 on Cablevision of NJ)

POTC - Dead Man's Chest

I finally got to see this last Wednesday (5 days after it opened - arrrgh!). It was fantastic! Just loved it. Pay no attention to the professional critics. If you loved the first one - you'll love it! If you love Johnny Depp - you'll love it. If you love Orlando Bloom or Keira Knightly - you'll love it!

It hadd all the rollicking good fun and adventure of the first one. The graphics were fabulous! BUT - if you're a real fan - you will scream at the ending! Please refrain from throwing things at the screen. Hope you're the patient sort - that's all I've got to say!

Survivor - Cirie's on a Mission

Go Cirie! She's out-manipulating the manipulators - but how long cans she keep it up. If she can somehow get Terry to do an alliance with her, I think she's got it made. Her Casaya tribemates on the jury will probably chose her over Terry. Of course Terry keeps winning immunity and he still has the idol so who knows what will happen. At this point he will probably offer it to someone as a bargaining chip, but as long as he keeps winning, he probably won't have to. I guess the big question is who will he take to the finals.

Danielle betrayed him once - will he give her another chance? Probably not. So who else - Arias? I don't see that happening, so go Cirie. She's a Jersey girl and I never thought she would have made it this far - I know I wouldn't. I don't even go camping - not even in my own back yard. My idea of roughing it is staying at a hotel where they don't put a chocolate on your pillow!

Top Chef - Getting Down to the Wire

Wow - all I could think of was how Stephen would have loved this challenge ... and I was soooo glad to know he missed out on it. <eg>

I felt bad for Lee Anne. She chose to do lamb before the others, but she got to serve hers last. I don't know if it made a difference, but you never know. I was really hoping she would win.

I was glad for Dave - he tries so hard, but I really think Lee Anne has more talent. I'm kind of thinking that if Harold doesn't blow it, he will win. Could be Tiffany though - she really does seem to have the right stuff cooking-wise, but I just don't care for her abrasive personality. Of course, you never know - could be editing is just makeing her look bad, but judging by the comments from the others, I don't think so.

Looking forward ti this week's reunion episode - sparks were sure flying in the previews.

Amazing Race

Whew! The hippies doged a bullet. I was hoping MoJo would get eliminated. I'm really tired of Monica's whinging all the time. I'm hoping either the hippies or Ray and Yolanda win. The frat boys are also starting to get on my nerves. I know it's a competition, but I thought cancelling the cabs was a really underhanded move. Even Romber didn't do that!

I really feel for BJ - he doesn't even have shoes. They weren't as prepared for this elimination round as they were for the last one, and I really think they would have come in ahead of MoJo if BJ had had a chance to get his shoes back on. They should have done the "Dry" and played the digeriedo. No way I would have done the wet once I heard about the spiders ::shudder::

Top Chef: Bye Bye Stephen

Another Yay! Mr. Pretentious Wine Snob is gone. Boy was he insufferable. Maybe he could get together with Andrea from the Apprentice - that' would be interesting.

I'm kind of rooting for Lee Anne in this competition. Dave is okay, but just plain annoying, Harold is a bit of a snob too and though I like Tiffany's dishes (and she reminds me - looks-wise - of my neice who is also a chef) she's a bit full of herself too.

Go Lee Anne

The Apprentice: Ding Dong the Witch is Dead!

Yay! Finally that Andrea is gone on the Apprentice! I thought Allie was going to get the ax - afterall she was the project manager and she failed, but Andrea should have gone weeks ago. She really wasn't a team player and she was soooo bossy. Wouldn't want to work with or for her - no way - no how.

Not really sure who I want to win this one. Unlike other seasons I don't really have a clear favorite - more just people I don't want to see win. Not crazy about Allie. Lee is annoying. Charmane and Tammy leave me cold. Even though Tarek looks like Orlando Bloom enough to be his brother, I'm not wild about him either. He has softened up a bit and become more likeable in recent weeks, though. I had some hopes for Micheal, but he failed as project leader IMO - even though they won. Sean's getting by on charm, his looks and his accent. I haven't really seen anything from him. So that leaves Roxanne - I'm kind of rooting for her right now. We'll see how the next task goes and who steps up.
